Anna Nicole
It is a show that was first announced for the Royal Opera House in March 2010, with its cast eventually revealed in early August, but now it is finally time to anticipate the upcoming production of Anna Nicole – The Opera as it gears up for its run in February 2011. The show is set to feature Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role, with other cast members including Alan Oke, Gerald Finley and the Welsh tenor Jeffrey Lloyd-Robert in the role of the Trucker, as well as various other talents. They will work to bring the life of the late television personality to the stage with Mark-Anthony Turnage taking on conducting duties.
The writer behind the opera is Richard Thomas, who is an acclaimed, though controversial, musician, actor and writer who has worked alongside comedian Stewart Lee on a host of shows. Amongst the most famous of these is perhaps Jerry Springer the Opera, which was a highly contentious show that appeared all over the country and caused outrage due to content that was seen as blasphemous. But this is not his only credit, though he did collect the Laurence Olivier Award for the production in 2004, with other work that includes This Morning with Richard Not Judy and Attention Scum, amongst others.
But those picking up opera tickets will be witnessing something very different with Anna Nicole as the story follows the life of the late Anna Nicole Smith, who was in the headlines on many different occasions during her life. She started out her career as a playboy model but received worldwide attention when she announced her marriage to 89-year-old oil executive J Howard Marshall at the age of 26. Her career would also include appearances in movies like The Skyscraper, Naked Gun 33? and The Hudsucker Proxy, plus television shows like The Anna Nicole Show. Smith died in 2007 at the age of 39.
Her show appears at the Royal Opera House in 2011 and is likely to include some distinct features due to its subject matter, with harsh language, sex and substance abuse all making appearances. As a result it is likely to stand out during a season that also includes new appearances from Il barbiere di Siviglia, amongst others.
Anna Nicole appears at the Royal Opera House on various dates between Thursday 17th February 2011 and Friday 4th March 2011.
