Avenue Q

What can be said about Avenue Q!  It is a rip roaring, naughty and highly entertaining musical that will have you laughing and crying in equal measures!

It is also a most pertinent show which resonates in today’s economic climate.  This musical explores the ‘credit crunch’ in a highly amusing way using a mixture of puppets and human performers.  This unusual cast tells the story of a wide eyed and ambitious college graduate who has returned to his former neighbourhood in order to follow his dreams.  This is a journey of self-discovery for this idealistic young man and he is helped on his way by a weird and wonderful set of friends.

Avenue Q is strongly influenced by the popular American children’s television series Sesame Street.  This educational series used a range of puppets including the well known Muppets, animation and human actors to teach children about a wide range of things.  These include literacy, numeracy and social skills.  This musical pays homage to that great series and many of the puppets in this show are loosely based on the Sesame Street Muppets.

However, where this differs from Sesame Street is the focus on adult performers and adult themes.  These include poverty, unemployment, homelessness, sexuality, racism and pornography.

What is Avenue Q?  It is what might be termed a ‘deprived area’: A downmarket area of New York City that is home to a range of ‘characters’, many of them who are out of work, homeless and generally, out of step with the times.  What they do have in common is the drive to change their lives, to find out why they are here and what their purpose in life is.

With very little money, a healthy interest in sex, unconventional lifestyles, large doses of humour and plenty of distractions, one of these being the form of a well endowed blonde, the inhabitants of this dystopia pull together in their quest to find a better way of living.

Note: due to its ‘adult themes’ this show may not be appropriate for children aged 12 and under.
