Cinderella

One of the world’s most famous stories returns to the stage of the Royal Opera House this November in the latest performances of the Frederick Ashton ballet “Cinderella”. For fans of the classic story, or even the work of the classic Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev, it is likely to be an unmissable event this winter season as the prestigious venue welcomes a host of top talent to its shows throughout the year. So there can be no doubting that “Cinderella” will be a popular choice for ballet lovers when tickets go on sale.

The story of Cinderella has been told on countless occasions over the years, with the animated Disney classic perhaps standing up as one of the most famous of the last century. And in Frederick Ashton’s ballet, the story elements that have made it popular remain firmly in place. So when audiences witness the show they will watch as they are introduced to Cinderella and her wicked step-mother and step-sisters who land her with all of the household tasks. But when a handsome prince throws a ball to find his bride, it could be her ticket to a happier life. With the help of her fairy God mother, plus her charms and stunning beauty, she can win over the prince’s heart and live happily ever after – as long as she is done before the clock strikes twelve!

Sergey Prokofiev is celebrated as one of the greatest composers who put pen to paper in the 20th century and when the music he composed for “Cinderella” was combined with the wonderfully re-interpreted classic by Frederick Ashton, the result was a stunning masterpiece that has been performed regularly ever since. The comic ballet sees the classic tale told alongside some comedy beats and ensures a unique spectacle even for those who are familiar with the original text. Alongside Ashton’s “Les Rendezvous” and his efforts in forming the original team of the Royal Ballet, it cements Ashton as a legend in his field, ensuring he is remembered even after his death in 1988.

With performers like Alina Cojocaru, Lauren Cuthbertson, Yuhui Choe, Roberta Marquez and Tamara Rojo amongst those confirmed for the role of Cinderella, alongside an equally talented team taking on the Prince, expect “Cinderella” to be a high profile event.

It appears at the Royal Opera House from Saturday 20th November 2010 to Friday 31st December 2010.
