Latest Review: "Fantastic show, funny, great songs, brilliant cast, definitely would go again...."

In 2007 an album was released that would eventually form the basis of a hit West End musical. It was titled “Dreamboats and Petticoats” and showcased great rock’n’roll music from a bygone era, proving to be a popular release in its own right.

The musical upon which it is based can therefore stand up amongst other West End shows as an example of a unique story taking audiences back to particular periods of musical history. We have already seen the likes of “Grease” and “Chicago”, which take us back to the 1950s and 1920s respectively, whilst “Jersey Boys” showcases the meteoric rise of Franki Valli & The Four Seasons in the 1960s. Now, audiences can take a step back to the 1960s once again with “Dreamboats and Petticoats” as a rock’n’roll adventure offers a compelling evening.

In 1961 we meet the characters of Norman and Bobby, who are two teenagers living during a time when teenage rebellion had gone full swing. It was an era when music began to embody this state of rebellion and in Norman and Bobby we have two characters who sum up the 1960s rock’n’roll scene perfectly. Together they are two musicians who regularly compete for the affections of their female fans, but they both have their sights on the beautiful Laura, a gorgeous girl who is capable of turning the heads of all the men in the room. However, Laura is more than just a pretty face, she is also a dab hand at the guitar and it could be her skills that propel them to rock stardom.

As this show is based on the hit album of the same name, expect classic musical numbers to take the form of “To Know Him is to Love Him”, “Happy Birthday Sweet 16” and “Three Steps to Heaven”, plus many more as “Dreamboats and Petticoats” takes us through he classic of Billy Fury, Ray Orbison, Chuck Berry, The Shadows and more.

That’s not all! “Dreamboats and Petticoats” is the work of a writing partnership that has given us some well known shows over the years. Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran are the team that penned “Birds of a Feather”, “The New Statesman”, “Shine on Harvey Moon” and “Goodnight Sweetheart” amongst others. It means that “Dreamboats and Petticoats” should not be missed.

“Dreamboats and Petticoats” is at the Playhouse Theatre and is currently booking until Saturday 24th November 2012.
