When Jennifer Beals appeared onscreen in the 1983 movie Flashdance, the producers were clearly hoping for a successful film, but even they couldn’t have anticipated the long-lasting effect of the blockbuster over the next few decades. Its title song “Flashdance...What a Feeling” went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1984 and the box office totals of 1983 made Flashdance one of the biggest films of the year. So it was inevitable that this musical film about following your dreams would one day make it to the stage.

In 2008, this finally came to fruition as Flashdance premiered at the Theatre Royal Plymouth and embarked on a tour of the United Kingdom to great success, eventually enjoying a triumphant finale in May 2009. Now, with that tour fresh on everybody’s minds, Flashdance finally arrives in the West End, with a run at the Shaftesbury Theatre beginning in September 2010. Whether you are a fan of the original movie or you simply want a great time at the theatre, Flashdance is the show for you.

This production has a lot going for it; not only does it contain the award-winning song “Flashdance...What a Feeling”, it also has other spectacular musical numbers in the form of “Don’t Stop”, “Manhunt”, “Totally Different People”, “Maniac”, “In Touch with the Beat” and “Gloria”. These songs are certain to attract a huge audience, but so will the talents working behind the scenes, with David Ian acting as producer alongside Robert Leon as director. Then there is Arlene Philips, the former judge of “Strictly Come Dancing”, who takes on the role of the show’s choreographer.

Flashdance tells the romantic story of Alex Owens, a young woman with big ambitions. Alex’s life is an interesting one; during the day she works as a welder in a steel mill where she embarks on a romantic affair with her boss Nick. Then during the evening she heads out into the town to perform as a ‘flashdancer’, an activity that she hopes will help her secure a place at a prestigious dance school. Her dream is to be a professional ballet dancer and as a result, Flashdance proves to be a production about following your heart’s desires.

Flashdance makes its anticipated appearance at the Shaftesbury Theatre from Thursday 7th October 2010 (previews from Monday 27th September 2010), with its original booking period taking it to Saturday 26th February 2011.
