Lend Me a Tenor: The Musical

Audiences heading to the Gielgud Theatre later in the year will undoubtedly be gearing up to witness the latest new musical to land in the West End – a transfer of “Lend Me a Tenor: The Musical”, which previously ran at the Theatre Royal Plymouth last year. Theatre Tickets will gain them access to a show that is adapted from the original play by Ken Ludwig, meaning that they will be experiencing a new version of a story that has earned an abundance of Tony Award nominations (and one win). Following its debut in the 1980s the original play also earned a Laurence Olivier Award-nomination for Comedy of the Year.

The show will feature the direction of Ian Talbot, the same man that directed the show in Plymouth, whilst Matthew Kelly also returns to the production in the role of Henry Saunders.

Kelly is, of course, best known to audiences for his television work that has seen him present shows such as “Stars in Their Eyes”. However, his career on the stage has earned him considerable acclaim in recent years, culminating in a high profile role alongside Sir Ian McKellen and Roger Rees in “Waiting for Godot” at the Haymarket Theatre in 2010. He also earned a Laurence Olivier Award for “Of Mice and Men” at the Savoy Theatre in 2003, whilst further credits include “Troilus and Cressida” at The Globe Theatre in 2009 and, more recently, “Sign of the Times” at the Duchess Theatre in 2011.

“Lend Me a Tenor” takes audiences back to the 1930s and tells a tale of mistaken identity as the tenor Tito Merelli prepares to sing the lead role in Otello for a fundraiser. Thanks to an autograph seeker he becomes embroiled in a case not only of mistaken identity, but of mistaken infidelity as well, and as a result chaos rules behind the scenes of the show.

London theatre audiences have plenty of new musicals to choose from in 2011, from high profile arrivals of shows like “Shrek The Musical” to other additions to the theatre scene like “Betty Blue Eyes”. It means that “Lend Me a Tenor: the Musical” will be right t home and is likely to attract a great deal of attention.

“Lend Me a Tenor: The Musical” is set to play at the Gielgud Theatre from Wednesday 15th June 2011 (previews from Thursday 2nd June 2011) to Saturday 19th November 2011.
