Macbeth

Giuseppe Verdi’s famous version of Shakespeare’s classic play “Macbeth” comes to the Royal Opera House in May, allowing audiences the opportunity to witness some acclaimed performers fill some iconic roles. Phyllida Lloyd directs the cast as they take on a text that has been doing the rounds since the 1840s and has been seen by different generations of audiences all over the world. It has withstood the test of time and remains a popular piece that opera lovers continue to flock to - making Macbeth opera tickets hot property, particularly for the prestigious Royal Opera House, when they go on sale.

The 2011 season at the Royal Opera House will be welcoming an array of popular productions, with “Aida” appearing alongside Beethoven’s only opera “Fidelio”, as well as Massanet’s “Werther”. But with “Macbeth” audiences get a story that has been celebrated in many different forms, from Shakespeare’s classic play penned between 1603 and 1607, to Verdi’s version from 1846 and the subsequent revised version from 1865. It means that the story of Macbeth, who kills the king when witches inform him that the throne will one day be his, is a timeless one that continues to resonate with audiences.

The performances are likely to be spectacular, with a cast consisting of Simon Keenlyside, in his debut for the Royal Opera House, as Macbeth, Liudmyla Monastyrska as Lady Macbeth and Antonio Pappano as the conductor. It is based on the mentioned 1865 version of the opera and has proven to be popular on previous appearances at the Covent Garden venue.

Macbeth runs at the Royal Opera House from Tuesday 24th May 2011 to Saturday 18th June 2011.
