Madama Butterfly

The Royal Opera House soon welcomes Puccini’s classic opera “Madama Butterfly” to its stage as Patricia Racette stars as the butterfly and Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier take on the role of directors. It will be an opportunity to explore the famous text that concerns a Japanese Geisha and her love of an American officer in the navy, with beautiful music propelling the breathtaking narrative along.

It also appears during a season that is also welcoming such shows as “Tosca” and “Cendrillon” to the stage, making this the perfect season to pick up opera tickets and head out to the Royal Opera House.

Reportedly based on a true story that took place in the late 19th century, “Madama Butterfly” follows the Geisha and her love right through the tragic conclusion that has made this a favourite for well over a century. Though it was not well received upon its original appearance in Milan in 1904, it would later be improved upon by Puccini himself and as a result we now have a wonderful piece of opera to enjoy year after year.

“Madama Butterfly” appears at the Royal Opera House from Saturday 25th June 2011 to Saturday 16th July 2011.
