After wowing audiences at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon “Matilda the Musical” now sets its sights on the West End where it will begin a run at the Cambridge Theatre, the venue that has been the home of “Chicago” since 2006. It will be an opportunity for West End theatre fans to pick up Theatre Tickets and witness a much-talked-about show from the Royal Shakespeare Company that has been receiving plenty of acclaim and abundant attention thanks to the talents that are working behind the scenes – from actor Paul Kaye and musician Tim Minchin to writer Dennis Kelly and director Matthew Warchus.
Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” tells the story of the title character – a girl that has been blessed with extraordinary intellect from an early age. Having read all of the books in her house before the age of 5 she proceeds to the local library and reads all the children’s books there, before moving on to school where her intellect continues to give her advantages and disadvantages. Then she discovers another gift – psychokinetic powers – which she is able to use to punish all of those that deserve it. The book was published in 1988, with a film following in 2006 from director Danny DeVito.
One of the actors in the show is comedian Paul Kaye, best known to audiences for his character Dennis Pennis, and he portrays Matilda’s father - the auto mechanic Mr Wormwood. In addition to Dennis Pennis – whom he portrayed on videos like “VIP – Very Important Pennis” and “Dennis Pennis RIP: Too Rude to Live” – Kaye has also performed in the likes of “Mongrels”, “Hotel Babylon”, “Inspector George Gently” and “Malice in Wonderland”, among other shows.
The cast also includes Bertie Carvel, Lauren Ward and Josie Walker, as well as Marc Antolin, Melanie La Barrie, Verity Bentham, Michael Kent, Matthew Malthouse, Alastair Parker, Nick Searle, Emily Shaw.
London theatre audiences will also get to experience the celebrated music from comedian Tim Minchin, which has contributed to the show’s worldwide reputation as one of the best musicals to emerge from the UK in many years. Minchin is known for his appearances in television shows like “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” plus the tour “Tim Minchin and his Orchestra”.
London theatre audiences can witness “Matilda the Musical” at the Cambridge Theatre when it begins its run on Tuesday 22nd November 2011 (with previews from Tuesday 18th October 2011). It has an initial booking period taking it to Sunday 12th February 2012.
