This June audiences can pick up tickets for a one-off event at the Royal Opera House which will give them a unique perspective on the place of “Peter Grimes” in the world of British opera.

Penned in the 1940s, “Peter Grimes” is held up as an example of the great work that comes out of these shores. Since it was first performed in 1945 it has regularly been performed all over the world. As a result this “Peter Grimes Insight Afternoon” is a welcome addition to the Royal Opera House’s 2011 season, which also includes the likes of “Madama Butterfly” and “Cendrillon”, among and array of others.

“Peter Grimes” was the breakthrough piece from the English composer Benjamin Britten, who would go on to find international fame and enjoy a legacy long after his death in the 1970s – all thanks to this opera. But the piece was an important one for Britain as a whole as well, seen by many as one of the most important English operas of the era and still held in high regards to this day – more than 65 years since it was first performed.
