The US hit show Rock of Ages joins a host of other Broadway musicals to make the transition across the Atlantic to appear on a West End stage. In a year when popular New York musicals like Million Dollar Quartet appear in the capital, the Shaftesbury Theatre gears up to welcome another jukebox musical that takes some of the most beloved glam rock classics of the 1980s and brings them back into the spotlight under the accompaniment of a compelling and heartfelt story. So for London theatre audiences, it is clear that Rock of Ages is an absolute must when it opens in August.

Audiences get the opportunity to step back in time to the 1980s in Rock of Ages as the story, which features a book by Chris D’Arienzo, unfolds onstage. It has already been highly regarded in the States and during its time there it has racked up an impressive number of Tony Award-nominations, so audiences know that they are in for something truly special. It first appeared at the Vanguard in Hollywood before it embarked on a US tour, with appearances in Toronto and Melbourne as well. So it is definitely the turn of West End audiences to get in on the action as it welcomes a cast of talented individuals to Theatreland.

The plot centres on small town girl Sherrie and LA busboy Drew. The former hails from Kansas and when she lands on the sunset strip she is unaware of the glam rock adventure on which she is about to embark. She soon meets Drew and whilst he currently works as a busboy he is in fact a wannabe big city rocker and together they bond over their love of 80s glam rock. Along the way audiences get to experience the classic numbers of artists such as Poison, Journey and the ever-popular Bon Jovi in an awe-inspiring spectacle.

So those with theatre tickets are in for quite a ride with Rock of Ages and as it arrives in the West End in a year that also sees in The Wizard Of Oz, Woody Sez and others there is no better time to experience the delights of Theatreland.

Rock of Ages arrives at the Shaftesbury Theatre with a run beginning on Wednesday 31st August 2011.
