The West End continues to prove that it is the top place to witness some of the world’s best musicals as it welcomes yet another movie character taking his steps on to the stage. Where previously these have been live-action movies such as Legally Blonde or the popular Billy Elliot, this time it takes the form of everyone’s favourite green ogre – Shrek. After appearing on a cinema screens in four movies as he embarked on adventures in a land Far Far Away, he now arrives at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane in Shrek the Musical, the latest incarnation of a hugely popular name.

The show has already been seen across the United States, where it took audiences into the world they witnessed in the movies. Originally starting out life in Seattle, it was eventually witnessed by Broadway audiences and those across the country on a national tour. So it was only natural that it would one day find its way to the West End as well - and it does so sporting an exciting cast. Taking on the role of Princess Fiona Cameron Diaz made famous onscreen is Amanda Holden (Kimberley Walsh will take over from October 2011), whilst television and radio funny man Richard Blackwood becomes Donkey. Meanwhile, Nigel Hardman portrays Lord Farquaad, whilst Nigel Lindsay becomes the green ogre himself.

In Shrek the Musical we follow the events of the first movie closely. In it we are introduced to the swamp-dwelling Shrek as he inhabits a small house in the middle of a large forest, which resembles the classic backdrop found in Disney fairytales. Pretty soon he manages to rescue a princess who has been trapped in a castle, thus disrupting a plan that has been set in motion to find her handsome prince. It transpires that she needed such a rescue to break a terrible curse – one that has made her an ogre just like Shrek.

So there are bound to be an abundance of London theatre fans hoping to pick up theatre tickets for Shrek the Musical from 2011 with a familiar team of characters portrayed by a group of well known faces. It replaces an equally famous show in the form of Oliver the Musical and is likely to become a blockbuster part of the West End scene.

Shrek the Musical makes its appearance at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane from Tuesday 7th June 2011 (previews from May 2011).

Please note: Suitable for ages 5+, children under 4 will not be admitted. The role of princess Fiona will be played by Kimberley Walsh from Oct 2011.
