One of the best known ballets of all time makes its way back to the stage of the Royal Opera House where it belongs as “Swan Lake” emerges in the capital in July 2011, ready to inspire and delight as some talented performers take on the iconic roles. Pytor Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet is a show that audiences relish every time it is performed and it is also a production that performers take great pride in presenting, ensuring that every time someone picks up ballet tickets to witness “Swan Lake”, they will not be disappointed. .

The story of “Swan Lake” follows the young man named Siegfried who goes on to experience a world of love and loss following the celebrations of his 21st birthday. It is a moment that causes him anguish as his mother requests that he get married and with little choice in the matter he heads out alone on a hunting trip. But what he finds out there is difficult to believe – a half man half bird magician named Rothbart, who has transformed many women into swans. When Siegfred finds them out on a lake, he realises that he must love one – Odette – in order to break the curse.

Mariinsky Ballet opens the season with the performers working from the music of Tchaikovsky and the choreography of Marius Petipa. Meanwhile, a whole host of talented performers step in to take on the roles of Odette and Siegfried. It will be the latest opportunity for London theatre audiences to witness a ballet first penned in 1876 and has been seen by audiences all over the world for over a century since.

Swan Lake appears at the Royal Opera House from Saturday 22nd January 2011 to Friday 8th April 2011.
