The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is set to arrive in the West End once again in 2012 as Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball bring the Chichester Festival Theatre production to the stage of the Adelphi Theatre, the former home of “Love Never Dies”, from March 2012. It means that once the production of “One Man, Two Guvnors” finishes its run at the venue with television’s James Corden in the lead role two more well known performing talents will be heading to the famous West End venue. It goes to show that 2012 is set to be another great year for London theatre audiences looking for memorable musicals.
“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” takes audiences to the seedy alleyways of London as Sweeney Todd decides to exact justice and revenge following many years behind bars in what was false imprisonment. After years of many wrongdoings against himself and his family he, alongside pie-shop owner Mrs Lovett, goes about his quest in a memorable and horrifying way in this dark musical comedy, which combines the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim with the story of Christopher Bond’s original play.
Imelda Staunton is a well known English actress who has appeared in a wealth of movies and stage productions over the years. To some she is perhaps best known for her role as Professor Umbridge in the “Harry Potter” film series, or for her portrayal of the title character in Mike Leigh’s “Vera Drake”, however, she has also appeared in everything from “Much Ado About Nothing” in 1993 to this year’s “The Awakening”. Her theatre credits include “Entertaining Mr Sloane” at the Trafalgar Studios in 2009 and “There Came a Gypsy Riding” at the Almeida Theatre in 2007.
Meanwhile, Michael Ball has also enjoyed an accomplished stage career, which has seen him appear in a wide range of London theatre musicals. He was recently seen in productions such as “Hairspray” at the Shaftesbury Theatre, “Kismet” at The London Coliseum and “The Woman in White” at the Palace Theatre. He was also a part of the original cast of “Les Misérables” when it appeared at the Barbican Theatre and then the Palace Theatre in the 1980s.
“Sweeney Todd” makes its appearance at the Adelphi Theatre from Tuesday 20th March 2012 (previews from Saturday 10th March 2012) to Saturday 22nd September 2012.
