Two one-act operas head to the Royal Opera House as part of it 2012 season and they take the form of Frederick Ashton’s version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” entitled “The Dream” alongside “Song of the Earth”, which features choreography from Kenneth MacMillan.
“The Dream” allows us to visit the world set up by William Shakespeare and approach it in a new way as the classic tale of confusions and mistaken identity as the real world and fairy world collide is transformed into a wonderful ballet. Barry Wordsworth conducts the piece whilst cast members include Alina Cojocaru, Roberta Marquez, Steven McRae and Sergei Polunin.
“Song of the Earth” (or “Das Lied von der Erde”) is Mahler’s classic opera that appeared just over a hundred years ago (it was November 1911 in which it was first performed after its conception between 1908 and 1909). With performers including Tamara Rojo and Marianela Nuñez, plus themes related to Chinese T’ang dynasty poetry, this will not be one to miss when it arrives at the Covent Garden venue so audiences are likely to flock to pick up opera tickets when they become available.
“The Dream/Song of the Earth” appears at the Royal Opera House from Wednesday 1st February 2012 to Monday 5th March 2012.
