When audiences arrive to witness comedy in the West End they might picture artists like Bill Bailey, who presented his latest show “Dandelion Mind” over Christmas, or Sandra Bernhard, who appears in February. Then there are comedians like Catherine Tate appearing in west end shows such as The National’s Season’s Greetings. So there is a lot on offer, but in early 2011 comedians arriving in the West End will be gearing up to appear in something altogether different; something that will present something truly unique for audiences to behold. It takes the form of Alex Horne’s famous fusion of comedy and jazz – “The Horne Section” – which features some of the best known comedians performing to some of the most talented musicians in town. It is not something to be missed.
The sounds that London theatre audiences will hear from the stage will something unlike any others found elsewhere in the West End. This is because comedians and jazz mix in a very strange way. Previous performances have seen various musical styles combine with breakneck stand-up routines to dizzying results, whilst other times it has been other entertainers like plate spinners, strippers or jugglers getting in on the action. So you never really know what you are going to get with “The Horne Section”; all you know is that you are going to have a distinct and enjoyable time.
And it is all thanks to Alex Horne, a comedian that has regularly worked alongside big name performer such as Mark Watson and Tim Key – both of whom were featured in “The Horne Section” at the start of the show’s run in January – and has also appeared on stages across the UK. Following his Edinburgh debut in 2000 Horne has returned to the Scottish arts festival on a regular basis and even made the transition to television, so he is a name that has cropped up in the comedy world time and time again.
So whether you are a fan of the West End in general or simply wish to witness some unique and hilarious performances from high calibre comedians like Mark Watson, Jimmy Carr, Tim Key, Tim Vine and Al Murray (all of which have appeared previously), then getting theatre tickets for “The Horne Section” is a must. With live music, plus other performers as well, it is a unique spectacle.
The Horne Section runs at the Lyric Theatre from Monday 31st January 2011 to Monday 14th March 2011.
