Every Christmas audiences relish in the annual production of “The Nutcracker” at the Royal Opera House and this year is no different. However, the famous ballet will this year be joined by another production of the classic at the O2 in Greenwich, where thousands more people will be able to take in the iconic set pieces from Tchaikovsky’s most famous work.
The production, which will run on six occasions between 27th December and 30th December is set to be presented by the Birmingham Royal Ballet following their production of “Romeo and Juliet” in the summer, which was a successful venture for the group.
“The Nutcracker” is a 1892 ballet scored by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and is based on E.T.A Hoffman’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. It takes place at Christmas and follows the character of Clara as she wanders downstairs on the night before Christmas to take a sneak at her presents. When she gets there, however, she is shocked to witness her brother’s toy soldiers fighting giant mice and when her nutcracker doll – a gift from magician Mr Dosselmeyer – comes to life to join in with the fight it kick-starts an epic adventure.
So alongside the likes of “The Nutcracker” at the Royal Opera House, “The Snowman” at the Peacock Theatre and children’s shows like “The Gruffalo” at the Lyric Theatre, there will be plenty to see and do for all the family this Christmas. Now “The Nutcracker at the O2” can be added to this list and it will undoubtedly provide plenty of entertainment under the watch of Victor Hochhauser and The O2 in association with Universal Music Arts and Entertainment.
“The Nutcracker” is at the O2 from Tuesday 27th December 2011 to Friday 30th December 2011.
