Latest Review: "Saw Top Hat for the first time last night (I'm sure it won't be the last). It was WONDERF..."

The film “Top Hat” first hit cinema screens back in 1935 and it has since been remembered as one of the great movie musicals. Now, more than 75 years after audiences first relished in the antics of American dancer Jerry Travers (portrayed onscreen by Fred Astaire) a new version comes to the stage of the Aldwych Theatre. This time around it will be the turn of Tom Chambers to step into the role made famous by the screen icon and he is joined by Summer Strallen and Martin Ball, as well as additional cast members such as Vivien Parry, Ricardo Afonso and Stephen Boswell. So when theatre tickets go on sale it will not be one to miss.

In “Top Hat” we follow Jerry Travers as he arrives in London to appear in a stage show from producer Horace Hardwick. But this being a screwball comedy things do not go according to plan and pretty soon a case of mistaken identity and romance sends things off course. Travers attempts to win the heart of Dale Tremond but she mistakes him for Hardwick – a married man – meaning that his advances horrify her as he attempts to gain her hand in marriage.

Tom Chambers is an actor who has appeared in various British television programmes and also appeared in “Top Hat” when it appeared in regional theatres as part of its UK tour. Audiences will recognise him from television series such as “Holby City” and “Waterloo Road”, though he has also made appearances in the likes of “Strictly Come Dancing” and “Loose Women”.

Meanwhile, Summer Strallen has also made a name for herself, though in her case it has been on the stage more than the screen. She recently appeared in “Love Never Dies” at the Adelphi Theatre and has previously starred in the likes of “The Drowsy Chaperone” at the Novello Theatre and “The Sound of Music” at the London Palladium. Her best known screen appearance has been in the long-running soap “Hollyoaks”, which tied into her appearance in the West End’s “The Sound of Music”.

“Top Hat” will appear at the Aldwych Theatre from Wednesday 9th May 2012 (previews from Thursday 19th April 2012) to Saturday 26th January 2013.
