In 2011 audiences arriving at the Royal Opera House will have two opportunities to experience the work of Giacomo Puccini as “Madama Butterfly” and “Tosca” both open their doors. Along with other productions this season, which include “Cendrillon” and the “Peter Grimes Insight Afternoon”, it will make for an impressive evening out as audiences flock to pick up opera tickets to get in on the action.

In “Tosca” the focus is on the title character of Floria Tosca and the positive effect that she has on the world around her. Set during the Battle of Marengo during the time of Napoloen this opera singer is a ray of hope in a world full of despair. But when her lover, Cavaradossi, is in trouble it is up to her to save him and this brings her face-to-face with the wicked Baron Scarpia.

Bringing the part of Tosca to life are the performers Martina Serafin and Angela Gheorghiu and both are likely to make this role as memorable as it deserves to be. The latter is a well known Romanian soprano who has performed on stages all over the world, from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to La Scala in Milan. In addition to previous experience at the Royal Opera she is more-than-experience in bringing this role to life.

“Tosca” is at the Royal Opera House from Tuesday 7th June 2011 to Sunday 17th July 2011.
