A Disappearing Number
The theatre group Complicite ensures that the Novello Theatre remains amongst the best places to witness award winning stages shows this Autumn as it welcomes the 2007 hit show A Disappearing Number to the stage. Back when it was originally seen at locations across the world and London venues like the Barbican Centre it became the recipient of a Laurence Olivier Award and Evening Standard Award amongst others and its return is likely to be highly anticipated.
So expect a lot of attention to fall on the show when it lands in the West End, taking up shop in the location of a current hit in the form of Tap Dogs, the Australian dance spectacular that has wowed audiences all over the world.
The plot of A Disappearing Number involves two separate narratives occurring side by side. Penned by the playwright Simon McBurney we follow two characters in the form of an Indian-American businessman and his math-lecturer wife, the former of whom travels from LA to Chennai in the present day. The separate narrative takes place a century earlier in 1910 when we follow a meeting between two geniuses in the forms of GH Hardy and Srinivasa Ramanujan. It is a compelling plot and one that has been celebrated ever since it was first seen by an audience.
Writer Simon McBurney was the founder of the Complicite theatre group who has been producing shows for them since the early 1980s. As a result, in the years since he set up the company he has also written numerous other shows that have found an adoring audience, with examples such as Street of Crocodiles and The Elephant Vanishes. He has also carved out a career as a director and an actor in movies such as The Last King of Scotland and Body of Lies, amongst others. So it is clear that he is a multi-talented writer and performer whose work has been seen all over the world.
And to make A Disappearing Number all the more appealing, it will be retaining its stars from the 2007 production, including David Annen (EastEnders, Doctors) and Fidous Bamji (The Sixth Sense), alongside Paul Bhattacharjee, Hiren Chate, Divya Kasturi, Chetna Pandya, Saskia Reeves and Shane Shambhu.
A Disappearing Number appears at the Novello Theatre, with audiences able to purchase theatre tickets to witness the show on dates from Friday 10th September 2010 to Saturday 25th September 2010.
