Lord Of The Flies

One of the most iconic novels of the 20th century provides the basis for the latest show to arrive at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park with Timothy Sheader leading the proceedings as director. “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding has fans all over the world and ever since it was written it has been the source of both controversy and acclaim. So now as it arrives on stage in the latest season at the open air venue it is likely to be a great source of entertainment and inspiration for London theatre audiences in 2011.

The famous story focuses on a group of schoolboys as they become stranded on a desert island. Some are students whilst others are a part of the musical choir but this adventure will soon take on another form as their attempts to survive in this new world descends into superstition and savagery, with their community sliding down a dark path and the boys regressing to a primitive form. Even today, 57 years since it was first published, it remains just as shocking and as deeply compelling as ever.

William Golding was a Nobel-Prize winning author and with “Lord of the Flies” pieced together a book that remains his most famous. In the years since it was first penned in 1954 it has been adapted to the screen twice – one in 1963 and another in 1990 – and has influenced countless other works. Though it was his debut novel it would provide the foundations for a wealth of work, which also included “The Inheritors”, “Pincher Martin”, “The Scorpion God” and “The Double Tongue”, among others, ensuring his legacy long after his death in 1993.

The play is one of many coming to the Open Air Theatre this year, with the others including “The Beggar’s Opera” and Crazy For You. Under the eye of Timothy Sheader, who returns after presenting “The Crucible” at the venue in 2010, it is likely to be a memorable production. But then, Sheader has been the Artistic Director of the Open Air Theatre since 2007 and in addition to shows for the venue like “Hello, Dolly!” and “Twelfth Night” has also directed the likes of “Imagine This” at the New London Theatre.

Lord of the Flies is at the Open Air Theatre from Wednesday 25th May 2011 (previews from Thursday 19th May 2011) to Saturday 18th June 2011.
