A classic play that has been celebrated by audiences and critics alike since it was first penned in 1947, Men Should Weep makes its way to the Lyttelton stage of The National Theatre, where it will undoubtedly find a large and eager audience. Featuring the performing talents of Sharon Small in the lead role of Maggie, plus direction from Josie Rourke and you have the make-up of a show that is likely to take audiences on a compelling journey to the impoverished world of 1930s Glasgow. So those armed with theatre tickets from October 2010 will be in for something truly special.
The focus of Men Should Weep is on the Morrison family and, in particular, the mother of the struggling household Maggie. It is here in which we get a glimpse at the world of Glasgow in the 1930s, where the human spirit manages to triumph whilst living under intense poverty. But it is not just the difficulty of raising a family in poor conditions that is the problem; there is also the fact that she has seven children and they all bring with them their own dilemmas. Her daughter Jenny, for example, is about to take flight, whilst her son also returns with a testing wife. But just around the corner could be the hope and the light they require to escape.
The role of Maggie is a coveted one and so London theatre audiences understandably expect something great from the casting. As such they are unlikely to be disappointed with the appearance of Sharon Small in the role, best known for her appearance in the television show Inspector Lynley Mysteries (in which she portrays Barbara Hayers), whose career has seen her appear onscreen in the likes of Taggart, Murderland, Masterpiece Mystery and the movie About a Boy. Meanwhile, her stage credits include The London Cuckolds at the National Theatre, Life is a Dream at the Donmar Warehouse and Spur of the Moment at the Royal Court.
Meanwhile, the cast also includes Sarah MacRae as Jenny Morrison, Anne Downie as Granny Morrison, in addition to Robert Cavanah, Moven Christie and Pierce Reid as other members of the Morrison family.
Men Should Weep appears at the Lyttelton National Theatre (towards the end of the run of Blood and Gifts) from Tuesday 26th October 2010 (previews from Monday 18th October 2010) to Sunday 7th November 2010.
