This year the Noel Coward Theatre hands itself over to two production from the Royal Shakespeare Company and in both cases they take classic stories from the Bard and transport them to a new location. One of them is “Julius Caesar” with a modern-day African setting, but from September audiences will be able to witness the well known actress and writer Meera Syal portray Beatrice in an Indian version of “Much Ado About Nothing”. The brief run will be directed by Iqbal Khan, who is known for helming the production of “Broken Glass”, which appeared at the Tricycle Theatre in 2011.

“Much Ado About Nothing” is the classic Shakespearean story of two juxtaposing couples as they face many dilemmas, with Benedick and Beatrice (Syal) among them. This union of two reluctant ‘lovers’ is defined by their dysfunction (they are constantly at odds) as their marriage looms. Meanwhile, another couple in the form of Claudio and Hero are completely different – they are very much in love and wish to tie the knot, but a bitter prince has other plans.

Meera Syal is well known to London theatre audiences for recent roles in “The Killing Of Sister George” (which she also wrote) at the Arts Theatre in 2011 and “Shirley Valentine” at the Menier Chocolate Factory and Trafalgar Studios in 2010. She is also known for numerous television credits, which include “Goodness Gracious Me”, “The Kumars at No. 42” , “Doctor Who” and “Holby City”, among others.

“Much Ado About Nothing” heads to the Noel Coward Theatre for a brief run beginning on Saturday 22nd September 2012 and continuing to Saturday 27th October 2012.
