Oddsocks Present Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a show that has survived the ages thanks to its timeless storytelling and its effect on popular culture. Its tale of star-crossed lovers can be understood by people of all ages and in the modern world, it is not unusual to find a contemporary take on Shakespeare’s classic play.
One such production is the upcoming “Oddsocks Presents Romeo and Juliet” at the Arts Theatre during March 2010. It will be a refreshing and unique take on one of the most famous plays ever to be set to paper, likely to bring the story to brand new generations in a memorable way.
In the original Romeo and Juliet we are introduced to two warring families; the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo belongs to the Montague family and whilst he is initially in love with Rosaline his sights eventually fall upon a Capulet daughter in the form of Juliet. The pair fall in love, but as we all know it is romance that can never be made public, for it would inevitably end in disaster. Despite marrying in secret, it is another act that sees Romeo banished from Verona – the murder of Tybalt, who is responsible for the death of his friend Mercutio. Eventually, the two lovers decide on a damning and drastic course of action to ensure they can be together forever.
In Oddsocks’ version of the play we are introduced to warring families of a different kind; two that own rival restaurants, complete with pizza and Italian sauce. The show features a car chase with a memorable Fiat car and two star-crossed lovers who will give “Romeo and Juliet” a modern-day makeover with a difference.
The Oddsocks Theatre Company is a family run enterprise founded by Andy Barrow and his wife Elli Mackenzie in 1989. The pair had classical acting backgrounds and wanted to combine this with their other passion – hilarious hijinks, forming the Oddsocks format and taking it to location across the country. Over the years they have built up quite the reputation for giving Shakespeare’s classic a makeover, allowing them to appear on stages around the world and present shows that have regularly put a smile on the faces of punters.
Oddsocks Present Romeo and Juliet is at the Arts Theatre in London from Monday 15th March 2010 to Saturday 20th March 2010.
