After wowing audiences at two London venues already “One Man, Two Guvnors” will now make the transition to the Theatre Royal Haymarket with a brand new Francis Henshall in the form of Owain Arthur alongside the same impressive script that earned the show such acclaim. The play is a new version of “The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni with Richard Bean updating the text to Brighton in the 1960s, providing it with a new spin and bringing the tale to a new, modern audience in London’s West End.
Those with theatre tickets will witness Arthur in the role of food-loving skiffle band player Francis Henshall, whose large appetite moves the plot forward. It is Brighton in the 1960s and Henshall is fired from the band, forcing him to take on a new role as a servant to a local crook. But that’s not the end of the story and seeing as Henshall is well known for following his stomach it is inevitable that he takes on further employment from someone else in order to fund his eating habits. So he is a servant of two masters and now all he has to do is ensure that the two employers never come face to face – something that is easier said than done.
Owain Arthur steps into the shoes left behind by James Corden, who appeared in the role when the production appeared at the Lyttelton National Theatre and the Adelphi Theatre. Arthur was the understudy to Corden during the run and his promotion to lead actor is his first lead West End role. His previous credits, however, include “The History Boys” on a national tour in 2006, “Birdsong” at the Harold Pinter Theatre (previously the Comedy Theatre) and “Romeo and Juliet” for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has appeared onscreen in the likes of “Casualty”, “Doctors” and “The Friday Night Club”, among others.
This classic play has already earned a great deal of fans – which is why Corden is taking the show across the country and then to the other side of the Atlantic as this version heads to the Theatre Royal Haymarket – and it should have no trouble encouraging visit from theatregoers in its new home. It appears at the venue during a year that also welcomes the likes of “The Two Worlds of Charlie F” and “The Importance Of Being Earnest”, plus many more.
“One Man, Two Guvnors” is at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Friday 2nd March 2012 and is initially booking to Saturday 15th September 2012.
