Pericles
The Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park regularly welcomes some acclaimed shows to its stage, with last summer seeing the likes of “Into the Woods” and others make a huge impression. This year it will be welcoming the likes of “Lord Of The Flies” and “The Beggar’s Opera”, amongst others, and as a result it is gearing up to be another successful season in the capital. But another show is set to give younger London theatre audiences something to enjoy in the summer, with a re-imagined version of Shakespeare’s “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” running at the Open Air Theatre throughout July.
“Pericles” is re-imagined so that audiences aged six and above can witness the acclaimed work from the team at the Open Air Theatre. They will witness the story of the young prince of the title as he embarks on a quest to discover the world, heading out to sea on an adventure of a lifetime. But along the way he experiences everything from lost love to tournaments, with shipwrecks thrown into the mix as well, in a coming-of-age adventure that celebrates the family. It is likely to be a wonderful way of introducing younger audiences to the work of William Shakespeare.
However, whilst it is a famous play from the Bard there is still much in the way of contention concerning his authorship of “Pericles” and whilst there are other suggestions as to the suspected writer, Shakespeare is still the name that is associated with it. But whether he was the real playwright behind the text or not (many say he at least part-wrote it), “Pericles” remains a classic text and one that has been seen by audiences for centuries. So it is a welcome part of the 2011 season in London, where other Shakespearean classics will also be making their way to the stage in the form of the Globe Theatre’s current season and even “Much Ado About Nothing” with Catherine Tate and David Tennant at Wyndham’s Theatre.
The show is set to be directed by Natalie Abrahami, who has worked on a number of shows at Dublin’s Gate Theatre, from “The Internationalist” in 2008 to “The Kreutzer Sonata” in 2009. Her previous London credit takes the form of “The Eleventh Capital” at the Royal Court Theatre in 2007.
Pericles runs at Regent’s Park’s Open Air Theatre from Monday 11th July 2011 (previews from Saturday 2nd July 2011) to Saturday 23rd July 2011.
