Following his high profile turn portraying the lead in Shakespeare’s “Othello”, Lenny Henry returns to a London theatre to present another classic play from the Bard – “The Comedy of Errors” at the Olivier National Theatre. It will be an opportunity to revisit the classic text whilst also relishing in the performing talents of a comedian-turned-Shakespearean actor and it is set to appear at the South bank venue from late November.

The production appears at the venue during the same season that shows such as “Juno and the Paycock” are also set to arrive in town.

Lenny Henry has been on our television screens for many decades, having emerged in the 1970s and appeared in numerous classic series. From his debut on “New Faces” to his recent stints on shows like “The Lenny Henry Show”, “The Magicians” and “Live at the Apollo” he has had a constant presence. He has also appeared in classic shows such as “The Young Ones”, “Hope and Glory” and “Chef!”, though his recent decision to turn to Shakespeare has given him particular attention. He appeared in “Othello” at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds in 2009 and that production later transferred to the West End’s Trafalgar Studios.

“The Comedy of Errors” was one of Shakespeare’s earlier works and as a result it introduced concepts that would be used again in later plays – in particular the case of mistaken identity. The plot centres on two sets of masters and servants who discover they are each others’ long-lost twin brothers respectively. The characters, in a surprising coincidence, then make their way to the same town and accidentally mix with one another’s friends as mistaken identity takes hold. Shakespeare’s classic farce has plenty of memorable moments and with a creative team that includes Henry, plus director Dominic Cooke, this is certain to be a show to keep an eye on.

The production is no stranger to a London stage and was fairly recently seen in Regent’s Park’s Open Air Theatre in 2010 in a revamped version that transported the story to the streets of Casablanca in the 1940s.

“The Comedy of Errors” is set to appear at the Olivier National Theatre from 29th November 2011 (previews from 22nd November 2011) and then continues in repertoire.
