Everyone remembers the hit 1950s movie “The Ladykillers”, which saw Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, among others, attempting to dispose of a sweet old lady so that they can keep their stash of stolen money. It is regarded as a classic British comedy and one of the most famous productions from Ealing Studios, so it is only right that its legacy lives on with a brand new stage version at the Gielgud Theatre. And who better to pen the script to the show that one of the most renowned comedy writers working in the United Kingdom? – Graham Linehan!
Linehan is behind some of the best known sitcoms to hit our screens in the last two decades. From “Black Books” to the current hit “The IT Crowd” he has regularly brought some of the best known comic characters to our living rooms. Then there is his best known work – “Father Ted” – which is still highly regarded thirteen years after it left the airwaves. In addition to these shows London theatre audiences will also be familiar with his work from shows like “Big Train”, “The Fast Show” (the characters of Ted and Ralph) and “Harry Enfield and Chums”.
And one of the actors appearing in the new version of the classic is Peter Capaldi, best known to most audiences heading with Theatre Tickets to the Gielgud Theatre for his role in the hit comedy show “The Thick of It”. He has enjoyed a long career and in addition to his role in the acclaimed series has also appeared in “In the Loop”, plus other TV shows and films like “Midsomer Murders”, “Torchwood”, “Local Hero” and “Dangerous Liaisons”. As such he will be a familiar face onstage.
But he won’t be the only one. For “The Ladykillers”, producers have also sought the talents of Ben Miller and James Fleet, the former best known for his partnership with Alexander Armstrong as Armstrong and Miller and the latter known for his long-running role of Hugo in the successful and highly regarded sitcom “The Vicar of Dibley”.
“The Ladykillers” is set to run at the Liverpool Playhouse in November 2011, with the run at the Gielgud Theatre running shortly afterwards.
