The Little Dog Laughed
In 2006, the off-Broadway venue, The Second Stage Theatre, became the home of the latest play from Douglas Carter Beane and soon enough it was becoming an Award-winning classic. Not only did the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination award it one of its GLAAD Media Awards, but upon the show’s transfer to Broadway it would eventually be nominated for Tony Awards and win one for its performer Julie White. The show was “The Little Dog Laughed” and it now appears at the Garrick Theatre in London, where it hopes to attract a good audience before it bows out in April.
The show features four well known actors in the lead roles, who help to bring to life a production that emphasises the inner workings of Hollywood and the ways in which the world’s best known stars maintain their outer image for the world to observe. It is no secret that Hollywood is a place where image is everything, but what lengths will people go to in nurturing this image?
The two main leads are Tamsin Greig and Rupert Friend, both of whom have become well known for their screen roles, whilst Greig has also maintained a successful stage career, earning herself a Laurence Olivier Award in 2007 for “Much Ado About Nothing” for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her other credits include “Gethsemane” at the National Theatre and television shows “Green Wing” and “Black Books”.
Friend has appeared in numerous movies including “The Libertine” in 2004, “Pride and Prejudice” in 2005, “The Boy in Striped Pyjamas” in 2008 and “The Young Victoria” in 2009. He will soon be seen in the likes of “Georgia” and “The Kid” in 2010.
The show also features Gemma Aterton and Harry Lloyd, the former being well known for movies like “Quantum of Solace” and “St Trinian’s” and the latter appearing in “Robin Hood” for television.
The Little Dog Laughed is the story of Hollywood heartthrob Mitchell (Friend), who has remained in the closet for the entirety of his career in regards to his sexuality. His secret has been kept hidden away by his agent (Greig) and both fear the consequences of the public finding out the truth. So when he begins to fall for a rent boy (Lloyd), danger could be on the horizon as he becomes entangled in a love triangle with him and his girlfriend (Arterton).
The Little Dog Laughed is at the Garrick Theatre where it continues to take bookings until Saturday 10th April 2010.
