The Secret Of Sherlock Holmes
For well over a hundred years the world’s most famous literary detective has been Sherlock Holmes, with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories becoming favourites of people all over the world. Since Holmes first appeared in a story back in 1887, he has been immortalised in various different forms, from television series to comic books and most recently, the Guy Ritchie-directed movie “Sherlock Holmes”, which hit cinema screens during Christmas 2009.
When it comes to the stage, one show has been doing the rounds all over the country with Peter Egan portraying the famous consulting detective and Philip Franks starring opposite him as his long-time companion Dr Watson.
That production is Jeremy Paul’s “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes”, a show that first appeared back in the 1980s and was recently revived for a UK tour. It was originally staged at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London and featured the stars of the television series “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. Now it is time for West End audiences to see what all the fuss is about as it opens its doors at the Duchess Theatre in July 2010, filling the space that has been left by the closure of “The Fantasticks” in June.
Both Egan and Robert Daws will be portraying the lead roles for the Duchess version of the play in the West End as the famous sleuth and his companion Dr Watson meet for the very first time. As they come face to face they must decide if the two of them are going to get along well enough to live and work together. Watson has seem some shocking things, having just returned from his services in the war overseas, but he is about to come face to face without something else that is shocking – the true identity of Baker Street’s most famous resident.
Both Egan and Daws have appeared in a number of stage and screen roles over the years, with the former appearing in the original movie version of “Death at a Funeral” and shows such as “Ever Decreasing Circles”. Meanwhile, Daws has appeared in everything from “Casualty” to shows like “Public Property” at Trafalgar Studios.
The Secret of Sherlock Holmes makes its appearance at the Duchess Theatre from Tuesday 20th July 2010 (previews from Thursday 15th July 2010) with an initial booking period taking it to Saturday 11th September 2010.
