They have a highly distinctive sound that is made all the more iconic by the vocals of Jared Leto, whilst their energetic guitar riffs keep their fans on their feet. During their time they have made their name through successful songs like “The Kill” and “From Yesterday”, which have enjoyed considerable airplay over the last few years and with their new album hitting the shelves in 2009 they are likely to continue providing rock anthems to radio stations for many years to come.
They formed back in 1998, the year before Leto appeared in the cult movie “Fight Club” opposite Brad Pitt and Ed Norton. At this stage it was Shannon Leto who put the group together, largely as a family project alongside his brother, with Matt Wachter, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler also added at this stage, with Tomo Milicevic also appearing. However, this was eventually whittled down to the three members who continue to appear onstage to this day. They first received attention upon the release of their debut album, the self titled “30 Seconds to Mars” (2002), which contained the songs “Capricorn” and “Edge of the Earth” and the group achieved moderate success by reaching 31 in the mainstream rock chart in the US.
However it would be their second album “A Beautiful Lie” that would cement them as a rock band to reckon with and it was from this album that the songs “The Kill” and “From Yesterday” would surface. They toured around the world and played alongside Head Automatica and others to armies of fans, who could not get enough of their signature sound.
Over the years they would rack up numerous awards and nominations, both for their songs and the music videos that would accompany them, before returning to the studio for their latest album, “This Is War”. The recording was a special occasion and the band invited their fans to what they called “The Summit”, in which people could hear songs as they were coming along and possibly even contribute to the album. It was finally released by December 2009 to largely positive reviews, continuing to cement their names as rock stars for the modern generation.
Whilst the group are well known because of the movie stardom of their singer Jared Leto (“Fight Club”, “Panic Room”, “Requiem for a Dream”, “Lord of War”), Shannon Leto has also appeared in movies such as “Prefontaine” and “Highway” whilst Tomo Milicevic is a certified pastry chef, showing that there is more to the members than meets the eye.
