After attending high school for a couple of years, Condon dropped out at the age of sixteen in order to travel throughout Europe. Here he discovered his love for Balkan-styled music. It was perhaps during his travels in Europe that Condon pinned down his musical style. Zachary Condon recorded the majority of his first album whilst enrolled at the University of New Mexico.

In his bedroom he would record songs with the assistance of friends Heather Trost and Jeremy Barnes who would later be additions to Beirut. ‘Gulag Orkestar’ was released through Ba Da Bing! records in 2006 and features tracks such as ‘Postcards from Italy,’ ‘The Canals of Our City’ and ‘Scenic World.’ The album did well amongst critics, gaining warm ratings and the title of Album of the Year from Rough Trade record store.

After the success of their first album, Beirut got to working on their second release. ‘The Flying Club Cup’ was recorded partly in a makeshift studio and in the professional studio of the well-known and respected band Arcade Fire. The album has a distinct French sound to it, with songs such as ‘Un Dernier Verre (Pour La Route)’ and ‘La Banlieue’ demonstrating this sound perfectly. The album was again praised by various critics, receiving four out of five stars from webzine AllMusic, and the same from Rockfeedback. Condon has stated that during the time spent writing material for ‘The Flying Club Cup,’ he showed an extreme interest in French film, music and culture; therefore, his music highlighted his interests.

In Brazil, Beriut’s music was so influential that it sparked a movement that would later become known as ‘Beirutando.’ Fans across the country formed tribute bands, and even set a date to honour the band through concerts played by these aforementioned tribute acts. Fans who have seen the band performing live will agree that Condon’s catchy tunes and powerful voice make for an incredible concert experience.
