Blur is the name of the British indie and alternative rock band who are originally from London. The band have been performing together for over ten years, and have released numerous successful albums and singles, all of which have been adored by their devoted fans.
The original members of the band, Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Alex James all met whilst studying at Goldsmiths College, an institution based in London. The band came together and named themselves ‘Seymour,’ a reference to J.D. Salinger’s novel. A scout from Food Records named Andy Ross noticed the band while they were performing a gig in the summer of 1989. Ross immediately knew that he wanted the band on the label; however, the name Seymour was not popular with him, and the band ended up changing their name to Blur. After playing various gigs to gain recognition, the band released the single ‘She’s So High,’ which reached a peak of number 48 on the UK Singles Chart in 1990.
In 1992, the band were in serious financial trouble. They were 60,000 pounds in debt, and decided to tour the United States in order to correct the situation. The release of the single ‘Popscene’ marked a turning point for Blur, changing their musical style. This change however, was not received well by fans in the UK, and lead to frustration and tension between band members.
It was not until the release of ‘Parklife’ in 1994 that the band began to turn their financial situation around. The single ‘Girls & Boys’ to date is the band’s most successful single, peaking at number four in the US Singles Charts and number five in the United Kingdom. The album also contained other various singles, such as the title track ‘Parklife’ that has become a hugely popular song in the United Kingdom.
