Doves formed originally when members Jez and Andy Williams met Jimi Goodwin at school in Manchester. The group spent their free time searching for and playing various gigs that they were offered. After a short break, the trio met up again in 1989 under the name Sub Sub, and released various singles. One of their songs ‘Ain’t No Love (Ain’t No Use)’ managed to reach the number three position in the UK Singles Charts, giving them the exposure they needed to continue; however, a fire burnt down their studio, meaning that the group had to abandon their dance styled music and to start fresh, making rock music which they are now famous for.

Between 1998 and 1999, the band were signed to Casino Records and recorded three EPs that demonstrated their new style to fans. Critics favoured their new sound and the band then began working on their debut album. ‘Lost Souls’ was released in April of 2000, and has twelve tracks such as ‘The Man Who Told Everything,’ ‘The Cedar Room’ and ‘Catch the Sun.’ The album received positive feedback from critics such as the BBC, who praised the album greatly. NME magazine gave the album an amazing rating of nine out of ten stars, as well as webzine AllMusic giving the album four out of five stars.

Two years after their first release, Doves came out with ‘The Last Broadcast,’ and album containing twelve tracks including ‘There Goes the Fear,’ ‘Caught By the River’ and ‘Where We’re Calling From.’ The album once again received positive reviews from various critics. Uncut magazine gave the album a full five out of five stars, and other magazines such as NME and Drowned in Sound gave The Last Broadcast nine out of ten stars, ensuring that Doves maintained a devoted and adoring fanbase.
