The band originally formed in 1996 and has since released eleven EPs and albums.
Shortly after forming, the band released their first album, titled ‘Gangstability.’ The record contains eleven songs such as ‘Panties in Your Purse,’ ‘Sandwiches for the Road’ and ’18 Wheels of Love.’ The album did relatively well amongst critics for a first release, earning 7.8 out of ten stars from Pitchfork Media, as well as similar reviews from others. The members of the band have spoken about Gangstability, saying that it’s their most country-sounding album so far.
Not long after their first album release, Drive By Truckers came out with Pizza Deliverance in 1999. The record contains fourteen songs such as ‘Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus),’ ‘The Night G. G. Allin Came to Town’ and ‘One of These Days.’ The album once again did well amongst critics, earning four and one half out of five stars from webzine AllMusic, as well as just under eight stars out of ten from Pitchfork Media. After the record was put out for sale, the band embarked on a six month tour to support it, playing over 150 shows. This tour resulted in a live album release that was titled ‘Alabama Ass Whuppin’.’ The months spent touring enabled the band to create a strong fan-base as well as to bond and become a tight-knit group of individuals.
In 2001, Drive By Truckers released the album ‘Southern Rock Opera.’ The album contains two discs, the first with eleven tracks such as ‘The Three Great Alabama Icons,’ ‘Dead, Drunk and Naked’ and ‘Days of Graduation.’ The second disc contains nine songs such as ‘Let There Be Rock,’ ‘Shut Up and Get on the Plane’ and ‘Plastic Flowers on the Highway.’ The album was a huge success amongst critics, earning four stars from Rolling Stone magazine, as well as earning the number six spot on Rhapsody Music’s ‘Best Rock Albums of the Decade’ list.
