When people think of great British indie music, their minds are undoubtedly going to turn to Birmingham’s hottest band Editors, which continues to show other indie groups what it is like to be a band at the top of its game and release critically acclaimed and popular records.
Editors have been together since 2002 and went by various names (such as Pilot, Snowfield and The Pride) before enjoying mainstream success with signature songs like “Blood”, “All Sparks” and “Munich”, whilst their albums have made them one of the hottest young acts around.
Consisting of Tom Smith, Chris Urbanowicz, Russell Leetch and Ed Lay, Editors records have gone platinum on two occasions and gone right to the top of the charts. Their talents have earned them two Brit Award nominations whilst the Mercury Music Prize has also recognised their impact with a nomination for their debut album in 2005.
This record took the form of “The Black Room”, which was the culmination of hard work that they had put into the band during the previous three years. They had met whilst studying for a degree at Staffordshire University and operated as both Pilot and The Pride during these early days in 2002. Using the internet and by touring around Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stafford, they slowly began to make a name for themselves before changing their name to Snowfield in 2003 with the addition of Ed Lay to the line up.
They continued to work hard to make a name for themselves, with word spreading around Birmingham about a talented new band. They soon signed to Kitchenware Records, changed their name to Editors and set about making an impact on a national scale.
They supported the likes of Oceansize and soon began to gain interest with the release of the single “Bullets”. But with the release of their debut album in 2005, things took off in a big way and pretty soon they were selling thousands of records and taking their place at the top of the charts. Editors had arrived with a bang.
They followed up “The Black Room” with “An End Has A Start” in 2007, which earned them a place at number one in the album charts. They then re-appeared on the musical landscape with “In This Light and on This Evening” in 2009. It is safe to say that Editors are now band for others to look up at in awe. From this album they released singles such as “No Papillon” and the song “No Sound but the Wind” appeared on the soundtrack for “Twilight: New Moon”.
Editors are right at home onstage, so make sure you get tickets for their upcoming show as soon as possible.
