Goldfrapp is the name given to the English electronic music duo from London. Members of Goldfrapp are Alison Goldfrapp who sings and writes the band’s lyrics, as well as Will Gregory who plays the synthesizer.

Alison Goldfrapp entered the music scene in the 1990s when she played the role as a backup vocalist in the band Orbital as well as with hip hop artist Tricky. In 1999, Alison was introduced to a composer named Will Gregory, who was interested in her voice after hearing the song ‘Human’ in its early days. Gregory invited Goldfrapp to record a demo with him to see if the pair would be able to work together in the future. Although the demo was never finished, the pair got along extremely well and decided to create a band together under Alison’s last name ‘Goldfrapp.’

Shortly after forming the band, the pair were offered a deal with a London record label named Mute Records. In a period of only six months, the pair worked relentlessly on their first album. The pair worked in a bungalow in the English countryside; however, Alison has stated that she found it hard to record alone at times, as the rodents and bugs that lived in the bungalow frightened her.

Aside from a few setbacks, Goldfrapp released their first album ‘Felt Mountain’ in September of 2000. The nine tracked album features songs such as ‘Oompa Radar,’ ‘Lovely Head’ and ‘Felt Mountain’ and did well amongst critics. NME magazine gave the album six out of ten stars, and other respected critics rated the album similarly.

Goldfrapp went on to release multiple other chart-topping albums and singles, and remain a powerful musical force today. For those who have seen Goldfrapp performing live, they will agree that Alison has an enchanting presence on stage.
