The band is unique as each member contributes to each song vocally, and the members often swap their instruments around during live concerts; demonstrating their extreme musical talents. The band originally formed in 2007 after playing various local gigs in London alongside acts such as Noah and the Wale and Johnny Flynn of Johnny Flynn and The Sussex Wit.
The members of the band not only played local gigs with these acts, but knew certain musicians personally; for example, whilst studying at Kings College School, Marcus Mumford and Ben Lovett met Matt Owens, the bassist of Noah and the Whale. Winston Marshall also attended school with a member of Noah and the Whale.
The band’s first major album was titled ‘Sigh No More,’ and was releaed in October of 2009.The album contains twelve songs such as ‘Roll Away Your Stone,’ ‘Little Lion Man’ and ‘I Gave You All.’ The album was not pleasing to critics, earning unfavourable reviews from critics such as The Independent and The Guardian.
In 2008, Mumford & Sons embarked on a tour of the United Kindgom with various other folk bands such as Alessi’s Ark and Sons of Noel. The band almost managed to make it onto the BBC’s list for ‘Sound of 2009,’ however they came short.
The band’s album ‘Sigh No More’ managed to achieve some success overseas although it received poor reviews in the United Kindom. In Australia, the single ‘Little Lion Man’ reached the number one spot on the Australian chart ‘Tripple J Hottest 100,’ one of the largest charts in the world. For those who have not had the chance to see this fresh new band performing live, it is recommended that you do so. The band plays energising and joyful music that an audience is sure to enjoy.
