Upon the band’s formation, the lineup consisted of Blaine Harrison as the drummer, with his father Henry on bass and William Rees on guitar. They were soon joined by bassist Kai Fish, with Henry switching to become another guitarist. Tamara Pearce-Higgins would also join as keyboardist, and Blaine took the role of lead vocalist, even though his voice had not yet broken. Tamara soon left the band, causing Blaine to go from drums to keyboards, and after using a friend Max on drums for a brief period of time, the band put out an ad for a wanted drummer. They eventually recruited Kapil Trivedi.
The band released an EP titled ‘Eel Pie Island’ however they soon realized that they would have to work on their material to become more professional. The Mystery Jets soon embarked on a tour with a cheap white van. During the same time, the band released a single named ‘Zoo Time’ through a record label called Transgressive Records. For the release of their EP, the band held large illegal parties with large crowds in an attempt to gain recognition; however, they were quickly shut down by the police. In 2006, the band released their most successful single so far; ‘The Boy Who Ran Away.’ They had also been lucky enough to receive plenty of exposure in the media: they were featured on MTV 2’s Spanking New Music Week as well as playing the NME Awards Tour and on British television show Top of the Pops.
In March of 2006, the band released their first full length album titled ‘Making Dens.’ The album contains twelve songs such as ‘You Can’t Fool Me Dennis,’ ‘The Boy Who Ran Away’ and ‘Diamonds in the Dark.’ The album did relatively well amongst critics, earning seven out of ten stars from NME magazine as well as similar ratings from others fanzine made for the show with entries from all the performers and artwork by the bands.
