In the early days, bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Who were featured at the concerts. Today, dozens of famous bands have graced the awards with their presence. The Strokes, Modest Mouse, Nirvana and plenty of others are all examples of NME award winners and nominees.

In 1994, the awards show was named ‘The NME Brat Awards’ as a mockery of the Brit Awards, another popular music award show. Originally, the NME Awards focused largely on the bands that were within the Britpop genre, such as Oasis and The Verve. Oasis won four awards at the 1996 ceremony, including Best Band and Best Album.

In the early 2000s, the NME awards focused on grunge and garage rock. The Strokes won three awards including Best Album and Band of The Year in 2002. The managers of the Brit Awards complained about the nature of NME, claiming offense to the mocking nature of the show.

In 2006, the indie band Arctic Monkeys won awards for Best New Band and Best British Band, as well as an award for the best song. The Arctic Monkeys became the third band to win this many awards at an NME Awards Ceremony. Other bands that were nominated in the same year included The Strokes and another British band, the Kaiser Chiefs.

A year later, a newcoming band named Razorlight was nominated for the worst album award. This was odd considering NME had awarded eight out of ten stars for the release. British Newspaper The Guardian criticized the awards in 2008, stating that the NME Awards favoured male acts, and didn’t portray enough diversity.

Individuals are able to attend the awards with pre-purchased tickets. Upon the announcement of a date for an awards ceremony, it is likely that tickets will sell out within hours. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for upcoming dates and book tickets as soon as possible. Show dates will be announced on the NME official website, as well as through the magazine issues.
