Like any band, it is live on stage where the members really shine and with Snow Patrol, you know you are getting something truly special. But success was not always a word you would attach to the band Snow Patrol as it was not until their third album “Final Straw” that they really hit the big time with their most famous single to date “Run”. But this has only served to make them true artists with fans from the underground music scene and the mainstream enjoying everything that Snow Patrol has to offer.

They first got together in 1994 with Gary Lightbody, Michael Morrison and Mark McClelland forming Shrug. These musicians, hailing from Northern Ireland but studying at Dundee University, gigged in local bars and pubs before changing their name to Polar Bear and losing drummer Morrison. Another name change and the addition of Jonny Quinn behind the drums finally saw Snow Patrol, closer to how we see it today, come to life.
By 1997 they joined the record label Jeepster and released their debut album “Songs for Polarbears” in 1998. Despite critical acclaim it failed to make an impact and this would be the story for their next album as well, “When It’s Over We Still Have to Clear Up”. The band struggled during this time, falling into debt and wondering how they were going to achieve the success many felt they deserved.

Soon enough they ended their relationship with Jeepster and Snow Patrol’s future was in jeopardy. The times were difficult, but the band persevered and through some contacts in the industry was eventually signed to Polydor. Though a bigger record label than Jeepster, Snow Patrol was concerned of losing their independence, but they needn’t have worried as their next album, the well known “Final Straw” cemented them with the success they deserved, catapulting them into the mainstream and giving them the break they needed. After this Mark McClelland left the band and was replaced by Paul Wilson, with Tom Simpson joining as keyboardist. The band as we know it today was born.

They followed up “Final Straw” with “Eyes Open” in 2006, cementing their success further, whilst “A Hundred Million Suns” continued to prove that they were a band at the top of their game. Their latest release, 2009’s “Up to Now” is a compilation album that proves what a great back catalogue of songs Snow Patrol really has.

The future now looks bright for Snow Patrol and as fans flock to see them live, Snow Patrol tickets should be at the top of everyone’s list of priorities as this award winning band continues to show them how it is done.
