The band first came together in London in the mid 70s when Chris Difford, Glen Tilbrook, Paul Gunn and Jools Holland decided they wanted to form a band together. They at first played under various names such as ‘Gaptain Trundlow’s Sky Company’ before finally deciding to make Squeeze their permanent name. The name is a reference to an album from the band The Velvet Underground. The members of Squeeze were fans of this band and were hugely influencd by them. In 1976, Gunn left the band and was replaced by an individual named Gilson Lavis. Another member joined the band as bassist during the same year; Harry Kakoulli.
In the early days, the members of Squeeze spent most of their time performing in and around south east London. The band played amongst other rock bands who were trying to gain success, such as Dire Straits. The band managed to get their first material released through a record label named Deptford Fun City Label. During one period of time, the band had to be recognised by the name UK Squeeze to avoid confusion, as there was an American band that played under the name ‘Tight Squeeze.’ In Australia, the band had to do the same thing due to another band named Squeeze who were also becoming popular.
The band’s second full length album was perhaps their big breakthrough. The album contains twelve songs including ‘Cool for Cats’ and ‘Up the Junction,’ two of the highest charting hits in the band’s history. Both singles managed to climb all the way to the number two position in charts for the United Kingdom.
For those who have not yet had the opportunity to see Squeeze performing live, it is highly recommended that you do so.
