The Eden Project has multiple plastic inflatable domes that house various types of plant life from throughout the world; for example, one dome focuses on tropical plants, whereas another focuses on plants from the Mediterranean area. The project was initially brought up by Tim Smit, who consulted architect Nicholas Grimshaw to make his idea a reality. After two and a half years, the Eden Project was opened to the public in March of 2001.
Each dome contains public walkways to enable customers to view the plants up close. The domes across the Mediterranean and Tropical plants are carefully monitored in order to accommodate the needs of the specific plant life inside. One of the areas of the Eden Project is an uncovered site called the Outdoor Biome. This Biome houses plants such as sunflowers, tea and lavender (plants that can live in and adapt easily to the environment in England).
The function of these domes is to teach people how various growing conditions can benefit the plants and allow them to grow safely and properly. The Eden Project gathers most of its water from rainfall, and uses this water in the biomes and in various facilities throughout the attraction. The only ‘mains’ water that Eden Project uses is for cooking, and is used in order to ensure cleanliness. As well as providing an environmentally safe place for plants to develop, the Eden Project works to prevent various environmental disasters such as deforestation. The organization plans various fund raisers to maintain and expand the Eden Project; for example, in 2007, citizens of Cornwall participated in a pub quiz that was set up by the Eden Project in order to raise money for improvement of the attraction.
For individuals wishing to visit ‘Eden Project,’ tickets range in price from 5 to twenty pounds. For children, various events are available to ensure that the whole family has a great time. Hands-on activities are also offered to keep children entertained if older family members wish to explore the biomes. For families, special ticket deals can be purchased at a discounted price. Tickets can be purchased from the welcome centre of the Eden Project, or from various ticket holders on the Internet.
