Born Arnold George Dorsey in 1936, he shot to fame after representing his country in Belgium at a song contest, after which he changed his name to that of the much loved German composer, Engelbert Humperdinck. After this he scored a top hit with the song “Release Me”. It shot straight to number one in Britain and stayed in the charts for a good long run: it was clear that people loved this wonderfully talented performer and craved more from him.
And so he kept on giving. Humperdinck went on to follow this up with the equally smooth and delicious singles that were “There Goes My Everything”, “The Last Waltz”, “A Man Without Love”, “The Way It Used To Be”, “I’m A Better Man”, “Winter World of Love” and “From Here To Eternity”. All of these have been hugely successful, as have his albums, which include such classic offerings as “Engelbert King of Hearts”, “This Moment In Time”, “We Made It Happen”, “Don’t You Love Me Anymore”, “You And Your Lover” and the seminal “Always Hear The Harmony: The Gospel Sessions”.
His contributions to music have been duly recognise. In 1989 he was given the prestigious mark of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, something that only happens to the greatest of the great.
