The Revolution is a side project band made up by singer songwriter Prince. The band made music from various different genres: heavy metal, hard rock and pop. During the days of The Revolution, the band released one album and two videos. The band is known for having many members of different ethnical backgrounds and genders.
In the early days the band constantly went through changes in the line up for various reasons. One of the previous members, Gayle Chapman, left the group due to her strong religious beliefs. She thought that the sexually explicit lyrics and acts on stage were inappropriate, and thus went on her way. Prince was unsure of what to name the band due to the uncertainty of whether the members would stay or not.
The band’s first album, ‘Purple Rain’ was a huge success. The album managed to reach number one on the billboard 200, beating other major acts of the time. The album contained songs such as ‘Purple Rain’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’ and ‘When Doves Cry’. The single ‘When Doves Cry’ was the most successful song on the album, managing to reach number one in the charts.
Although the band managed to become extremely successful, the members decided to split up in 1986.
