Pulp was a British rock band that formed during the late 1970s. The band formed when members Jarvis Cocker and a friend, Peter Dalton, decided they wanted to play music. The band played a varied style of music and became well known locally after sending in a demo to play a ‘Peel Session’.
Although the band was well known in their local town, the band weakened when most of the members left for university. Cocker, the band’s lead vocalist was set on breaking up the band; however, a recording session with Russel Senior and Magnus Doyle changed his mind. After experimenting with a noisier style of music, Doyle and Senior were replaced by Tim Allcard and Pete Mansell.
Unfortunately, the keyboardists had to again be replaced. Candida Doyle took the spot, and shortly after the band was signed to Fire Records. While under the supervision of Fire Records, the band released singles such as ‘Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)”; however, the band’s relationship with the record company was not all happy, and Cocker has admitted that the band only took the offer to record with them as nothing else was available to them at the time and they thought this was their only option.
The band also experienced bad relationships with a local label named ‘FON’. The band was scheduled to release a single under this label; however, relationships became tense and the single’s release had to be cancelled at the last minute. The band continued to make music through the nineties, up until 2002, where the band decided to go on a hiatus. During this time, the band’s front man, Jarvis Cocker, engaged in several part time projects, including work on music for the Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The band re-released a few of their albums in early 2006 that included extras such as B-Sides and demos.
Pulps music is still popular today and has remained popular through generations of individuals. For those who were lucky enough to see Pulp performing during their prime, they will agree that seeing the band live was a mesmerizing experience. The talent and dedication to the music that the band displayed on stage was an inspiring sight that drove fans wild.
