R.E.M is an American rock band from Georgia in the United States of America. Formed in 1980, the band consists of singer Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills on guitar, and Bill Berry on drums. The band is know for their unique style of music, and is also considered one of the first bands to delve into the genre of alternative rock.
In early 1981, the band released their first single ‘Radio Free Europe’ in Drive-In Studios in North Carolina. Although the single was only sold in one thousand copies, it quickly sold out and gained popularity, being mentioned as one of the year’s best singles by the New York Times.
The band, although it had gained popularity, was not hugely successful under the management of the record company I.R.S. After the contract was finished, the band decided to sign with Warner Brothers Records. Under this company’s supervision the band recorded the album ‘Green’, featuring singles such as “Orange Crush” and “Stand”. This album has gone on to sell millions of copies worldwide.
After seventeen years with the band, Bill Berry announced that he was leaving the band. He stated that, although he was grateful for the experience, he did not feel as if the rock star lifestyle was what he wanted anymore. Because of Berry’s departure, the band had to cancel their upcoming recording sessions. The band felt unusual and unnatural without the drummer in the band. When the band finally did record, it did not run smoothly; the band almost split on a couple of occasions and had to all call a meeting to discuss whether they could continue with the recording process or not. The album ‘Up’ did well in both the US and UK charts when first released; however, continued sales proved to be disappointing. R.E.M’s fan-base was shifting in popularity from the United States to the United Kingdom, where their singles were continually selling more and more.
R.E.M is still in action to this day. For fans that adore this band and have yet to see them in concert, buying tickets is a must. The band not only plays their singles incredibly during live performances, but the visual experience during an R.E.M concert is also something that is not to be missed. In concert, fans will be able to experience well known songs from any of the band’s fourteen albums, ensuring that the experience is exciting and interesting.
