Ramin Karimloo Returning to Les Miserables at the Queen's Theatre
The Phantom of the Opera Star Taking on the Role of Jean Valjean from November 2011
Ramin Karimloo, last seen taking on the role of The Phantom in “Love Never Dies” at the Adelphi Theatre, is set to appear another of the capital’s most famous musicals – “Les Misérables”. The move will mark the latest occasion in which the “Phantom of the Opera” star has appeared in a production of the show following his stints in the West End version in 2002 and 2004 and in “The Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Show” at the O2 Arena last year.
Though he has had many stints with the Cameron Mackintosh musical at the Queen’s Theatre Karimloo’s most famous work remains with “The Phantom of the Opera”, having portrayed The Phantom in the original production at Her Majesty’s Theatre (following his performance as Raoul and also as Gustave Daaé in the 2004 movie version). More recently he continued to portray the role of The Phantom in “Love Never Dies” though his other credits include national tours of “Sunset Boulevard”, “Miss Saigon” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”.
“Les Misérables” originally opened at the Barbican Theatre in 1985 (allowing it to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the capital last year) and it would transfer to the Palace Theatre later in the same year before landing at its current home of the Queen’s Theatre in 2004. The story focuses on Jean Valjean and his struggles during a twenty year period in Napoleonic France. At the start of the show he resides in a large prison hulk and when he is released he is shunned as an ex-con. He lands himself in hot water again when he is caught stealing silver and this sparks a twenty-year cat and mouse chase with the determined Inspector Javert.
The production is likely to find itself in the spotlight regularly over the next year as a movie version is in production starring Hugh Jackman in the lead role. It will follow in the footsteps of other West End/Broadway plays and musicals that have made it to the silver screen such as “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Mamma Mia!” and “War Horse”.
