Alongside the Italian Grand Prix, it is the oldest fixture of the Formula One season, appearing in the first year of the F1 World Championship in 1950 and taking place at various different venues across the century. As well as Silverstone, it has been held at Brands Hatch and Aintree, with the current contract seeing Silverstone host the event until at least 2026. It means that each year British Grand Prix ticket holders will flock to Silverstone to see the best drivers in the world go head to head.
Grand Prix motor racing has had a place in the UK for many years, going as far back as 1926 when the event was first held at Brooklands. This is where it remained in these pre-war days and eventually it alternated with Silverstone from 1948. It was then a part of the racing calendar of F1 from 1950 onwards, where it would alternate between Silverstone and Aintree and then from 1963 to 1986 between Silverstone and Brands Hatch, before finding a permanent home at Silverstone from 1987.
There have been many winners of the race, with British drivers taking pride of place on the podium on various occasions, with Lewis Hamilton taking the trophy in 2008 and previous years seeing the likes of David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, Nigel Mansell and John Watson win the coveted title. Other winners on this circuit have included Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Räikkönen, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher.
The British Grand Prix is likely to remain on the sporting calendar way into the foreseeable future, with 2026 being the final year of Silverstone’s contract and future dates highly likely. The result is that Formula One will regularly make its way to British shores and motor racing fans will be quick to get hold of British Grand Prix tickets as soon as they go on sale. As an anticipated event on the sporting calendar, it will remain a popular location to see the best drivers in the world.
