Adriana Lecouvreur

Important Info: Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Audiences picking up opera tickets for the latest offerings at the Royal Opera House will be in for a treat this winter season as the venue welcomes a classic production to its stage; one that has not been seen for here for some time and one that is still held in high regards over a hundred years since it was first performed. The production is Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur and during its run from November to December 2010 audiences will witness some talented names step up to the mantle under the direction of David McVicar (the recent production of Rigoletto).

Adriana Lecouvreur concerns the famous actress of the same name, who performed in various productions in the 18th century. The opera is a fictional account of her life, with envious rivalry playing out in the theatrical world and amongst aristocrats, with romance playing a huge role in the proceedings. So Adriana Lecouvreur will be a step back in time for the audience, not just because the opera itself dates from the turn of the 20th century, but also thanks to a plot that goes back even further. And with Angela Gheoghiu and Angeles Blancas Gulin alternating in the title role it is likely to feature some compelling performances.

The show first appeared in front of an audience in 1902 when it had its world premiere in Milan. After that it would appear all over the world, with the show opening in the United States in 1907 at New Orleans’ French Opera House. A year earlier it had also been seen at the Royal Opera House in London and this would be the last time it would be seen at the venue until this very production in 2010, meaning that audiences witnessing the show will be in for a rare treat. And seeing as some big names have appeared in lead roles in other countries over the years, including the Spanish tenor Pacido Domingo, it is clear that it is a prestigious treat at that.

So it is likely to be a stand-out winter season for the Royal Opera House, thanks not only to the production of Adriana Lecouvreur but also thanks to other shows opening around the same time, with Tannhäuser appearing from December, with the likes of Anna Nicole opening in 2011.

Adriana Lecouvreur makes its appearance at the Royal Opera House from Thursday 18th November 2010 to Friday 10th December 2010.
